❓ Frequently Asked Questions — Gift Nifty Live

What is Gift Nifty live and why do traders check it every morning?
Gift Nifty live is the real-time price of the Nifty 50 futures contract traded on NSE International Exchange (NSE IX) in GIFT City, Gandhinagar, Gujarat. It trades for approximately 21 hours a day, absorbing global market moves while Indian markets are closed. Traders check it between 6:30 AM and 9:15 AM IST every morning to calculate the expected gap-up or gap-down opening for Nifty 50. A higher Gift Nifty than yesterday's Nifty close signals a gap-up opening. A lower Gift Nifty signals a gap-down opening.
Is Gift Nifty the same as SGX Nifty?
Yes. Gift Nifty and SGX Nifty are the same underlying futures contract based on Nifty 50. In July 2023, the contract was renamed from SGX Nifty (traded on Singapore Exchange) to Gift Nifty (now traded on NSE International Exchange in GIFT City, Gujarat, India). The instrument is identical — only the exchange and name changed. Many traders still search for "SGX Nifty live" out of habit, but they are looking for the same thing as "Gift Nifty live."
What time does Gift Nifty open today?
Gift Nifty opens at 6:30 AM IST in Session 1 (6:30 AM to 3:40 PM IST). After a 55-minute break, Session 2 runs from 4:35 PM to 2:45 AM IST the next day. The most important window for Indian traders is 6:30 AM to 9:15 AM IST — this is when Gift Nifty has reacted to the US market close and gives the clearest signal for how Nifty 50 will open. Gift Nifty even trades on Indian public holidays when NSE and BSE are closed.
What is the difference between Gift Nifty and Nifty 50?
Nifty 50 is the actual stock index of 50 companies that trades on NSE from 9:15 AM to 3:30 PM IST in Indian Rupees. Gift Nifty is a USD-denominated futures contract that tracks the same Nifty 50 index but trades for ~21 hours a day on NSE International Exchange in GIFT City. Gift Nifty is used as a pre-market indicator — it tells you the direction before NSE opens. You cannot trade Gift Nifty directly as an Indian retail investor without a SEBI-registered IFSC broker.
How does Gift Nifty affect Nifty 50 opening?
Traders compare the current Gift Nifty level with the previous Nifty 50 close. The difference gives an estimated opening gap. For example: if Nifty 50 closed at 24,000 and Gift Nifty is at 24,300 next morning, Nifty 50 is expected to open approximately 300 points higher. This is a directional indicator — domestic news, FII flows, and intraday events can change the actual opening. Always wait for the real 9:15 AM opening before trading.
Where is GIFT City and why is Gift Nifty traded there?
GIFT City (Gujarat International Finance Tec-City) is located in Gandhinagar, Gujarat — approximately 30 kilometres from Ahmedabad. It is India's first International Financial Services Centre (IFSC) — a special economic zone designed to bring offshore financial trading into India. The NSE International Exchange (NSE IX) operates from GIFT City. Before GIFT City, the same contract traded in Singapore as SGX Nifty — moving it to India was part of the government's initiative to consolidate global Nifty trading within Indian jurisdiction.
Which sector has the most weight in Nifty 50?
Financial Services has the highest sector weight in Nifty 50 at approximately 35.45% as of April 2026. This includes HDFC Bank (6.42%), SBI (5.07%), ICICI Bank (4.87%), Bajaj Finance (2.96%), Axis Bank (2.16%), and Kotak Bank (1.92%). Because of this concentration, RBI policy decisions — like repo rate changes — have the single biggest impact on Nifty 50. When banking stocks fall, Nifty falls hard. This is why watching HDFC Bank, SBI, and ICICI Bank every morning is non-negotiable for traders.
